Climatic and evolutionary contexts are required to infer plant life history strategies from functional traits at a global scale

چکیده

Life history strategies are fundamental to the ecology and evolution of organisms important for understanding extinction risk responses global change. Using datasets a multiple response modelling framework we show that trait-climate interactions associated with life diverse range plant species at scale. Our informs our trade-offs positive correlations between elements after accounting environmental context evolutionary trait-based constraints. Interactions traits climatic were needed explain variation in age maturity, distribution mortality across lifespan generation times species. Mean maturity plants’ under These findings provide empirical support theoretical expectation is key trait relationships globally.

Functional traits explain variation in plant life history strategies.

Ecologists seek general explanations for the dramatic variation in species abundances in space and time. An increasingly popular solution is to predict species distributions, dynamics, and responses to environmental change based on easily measured anatomical and morphological traits. Trait-based approaches assume that simple functional traits influence fitness and life history evolution, but ri...

Foraging Strategies are Related to Skull Morphology and Life History Traits of Melanerpes Woodpeckers

Links between morphology and foraging strategies have been well established for many vertebrate groups. Foraging strategies of Melanerpes woodpeckers are especially variable, with at least six species being proficient flycatchers; the remainder of the better known species do not flycatch. Our objective was to examine variation in foraging tactics as it relates to skull morphology and other life...

Are animal personality traits linked to life-history productivity?

Animal personality traits such as boldness, activity and aggressiveness have been described for many animal species. However, why some individuals are consistently bolder or more active than others, for example, is currently obscure. Given that life-history tradeoffs are common and known to promote inter-individual differences in behavior, we suggest that consistent individual differences in an...

The adaptive value of functional and life-history traits across fertility treatments in an annual plant.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Plant functional traits are assumed to be adaptive. As selection acts on individuals and not on traits, interpreting the adaptive value of a trait not may be straightforward. For example, productive leaves are associated with fertile environments. However, it is not clear if productive leaves confer an advantage in these habitats, or if they are an advantage as part of a sui...
